On 7th and 8th May 2013, LIN organized the event “Meet the experts: Human Resources & Volunteer Management” with HR experts in HCMC. Each of the participating NPOs met face-to-face with an expert for at least 30 minutes to share their difficulties in HR and Volunteer management, and received helpful advice from them. The questions had been sent to the experts before the meeting.
Seven HR expert volunteers in HCMC contributed eight hours total to provide consultation for NPOs that are currently supporting disadvantaged children, , wildlife etc. Three HR experts from Adecco Vietnam including Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Thoai Van, Ms. Ho Thi Ngoc Quyen and Ms. Doan Thanh Hang consulted one-on-one with three NPOs at the head office of Adecco on 7 May. Before the consultation, Adecco had made a short presentation on how to motivate the employees through community activities and a number of social programs of Adecco.
Subsequently, on 8 May, four experts including Ms. Le Thu Hong (from Pepsico), Ms. Tran Quynh Boi (from Fideco), Ms. Le Thi Tuyet Hang (from Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank) and Ms. Ho Mai Anh (from Habitat for Humanity Vietnam Organization) provided consultation for seven NPOs at LIN Center for Community Development.
One of the issues that many NPOs faced in HR and volunteer management is how to attract and retain members within a limited budget. The experts proposed a large number of solutions. “This is a common issue since salaries and profits are few of the criterias to retain employees, but NPOs lack all of them. Organizations can instead compensate volunteers by creating friendly and comfortable working environment, and give them the oppurtunities to participate in CSR programs. In fact, some employees value factors such as an outgoing boss, teamwork and cooperation among colleagues, managers who understand the characteristics and abilities of each employee to delegate suitable tasks to them…”, said Ms. Ho Thi Ngoc Quyen (Adecco).
This event received posititve feedback from most participating organizations. A member from Not Lang Charity said “I appreciate the program as well the content experts shared in the meeting. However, due to limited time, we could not discuss further on issues brought up during the discussion.”
“Meet the Experts” is a bimonthly event that is a part of a project sponsored by Irish Aid to build the capacity for VNPOs. Every “Meet the Experts” attempts to tackle a different organization development struggle. Pro bono volunteers will share their experience and consult with NPOs one-on-one by referencing the questions they submitted prior to the event. After an event, LIN will collect frequently asked questions and share them on the website http://www.linvn.org.
